It looks like online shopping is claiming another brick-and-mortar store. Sports Authority, which has 463 stores nationwide that includes eight in Hawaii, will soon close or have its stores sold off after a failed attempt to reorganize out of bankruptcy. It wasn’t so long ago that Sports Authority was the go-to, one-stop-shop for all needs athletic; in fact, the Lihue, Kauai, store opened just a couple of years ago. Now, the fate of hundreds of Hawaii employees is in limbo, and consumers holding gift cards or store credit are urged to quickly use them. It is, sadly, game over.
Charter school must focus on bottom line
The community of Na Wai Ola Public Charter School surely feels distressed by the sword hanging over the Hawaii island campus, but it’s unlikely to go away. The state’s Public Charter School Commission could yank the school’s charter if it can’t meet payroll. The oversight is the result of a new state law, and as unpleasant as all this is, it’s needed to make sure the school’s allotment of public funding is well spent. A good concept and good intentions are important, but it’s not enough.
