The University of Hawaii-Hilo’s Jordan Kurokawa has been selected as the co-PacWest Pitcher of the Week after his strong performance against Hawaii Pacific.
The senior from Honolulu and Maryknoll pitched a shutout against HPU, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out nine.
This is the second time this season that Kurokawa has won the award, and fifth in his career. Kurokawa also won the award after pitching a two-hit shutout against Hawaii to open the season.
Corpuz leads Galdiano at states
Punahou’s Allisen Corpuz shot a 2-under 70 to lead after the opening round of the David S. Ishii Foundation/HHSAA Girls Golf Championship at Wailua Municipal Golf Course on Kauai.
Corpuz leads teammate and three-time defending state champion Mariel Galdiano by two shots after the first round. Kamehameha’s Lorraine Char and Mid-Pacific’s Erica Chiang are tied for third with a first-round score of 73.
Overall, Punahou leads the team competition with a composite score of 219, 13 shots clear of ‘Iolani and Mid-Pacific.
HPU announces 3 for women’s hoops
Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball coach Reid Takatsuka announced three commitments for the 2016-17 season on Monday.
Ella Fotu, the sister of former Hawaii standout Isaac Fotu, will transfer from Boise State after spending her freshman year with the Broncos. Fotu is a member of New Zealand’s national team pool, and played for the U16, U17 and U18 teams.
Also joining the Sharks is former Mililani standout Sarah Liva, who returns home after playing volleyball for one season at Portland State. Liva was a four-time letter-winner in basketball at Mililani.
The third signee is Anna Mumm, who is transferring to HPU after a dominant season at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. The Laguna Hills, Calif., native averaged 20.2 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game last season.
