Starting 6 a.m. Thursday, Honolulu police will begin enforcing no-parking rules on the bike lane side of the Lanikai loop 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the city said in a news release Tuesday. Residents have complained for years about traffic and parking problems caused by people flocking to Lanikai Beach.
The Department of Transportation Services said it was trying to give motorists and area residents a chance to plan ahead and remove all vehicles from the bike lane side of the loop along Aalapapa and Mokulua drives.
Missing inmate turns himself in on Big Island
Hawaii island inmate Michael Joyce turned himself in to police Monday night and was returned to the Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
Joyce, who was serving time for second-degree assault, failed to report to the Hilo facility for his scheduled check-in April 6.
He is classified as “community custody,” which is the lowest custody level. His next parole hearing was scheduled for June.
Joyce was in the extended-furlough program and lived and worked outside of the facility but must check in at various times throughout the month.
Road on Kauai will undergo extensive work
Starting Tuesday, Puhi Road will be reconstructed using cement so it can support heavy vehicles, Kauai County officials said.
Other work includes sidewalks, bike lanes and drainage improvements.
Crews will be working on Puhi Road from Kaumualii Highway to Kaneka Street from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. The project is expected to be completed early next year, officials said.
Traffic in the area will be affected, according to officials who advise that motorists should seek alternate routes, follow traffic control signs and allow for extra time to get to their destinations.
