All seeded players in both the boys and girls singles advanced in the second round of the Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA State Tennis Championships on Thursday at the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii Tennis Center.

On the boys’ side, top-seeded Andre Ilagan of Farrington made quick work of Punahou’s Darwin Hu, winning 6-1, 6-0. On the other side of the bracket, ‘Iolani’s Phuc Huynh also breezed into the quarterfinals, defeating Aiea’s Ford Nakagawa 6-0, 6-2.

Ilagan is the OIA champion and Huynh is the ILH champ.

All the seeded boys won fairly easily, with no seeded player allowing more than five total games to their opponent. It was a similar story for the girls, as top seeds Emily Soares of Hilo and Katreina Corpuz of Punahou took care of business easily. Soares defeated ‘Iolani’s Cambrie Motooka 6-0, 6-2, while Corpuz shut out Baldwin’s Nicole Matsui.

In boys doubles, the matches were closer, but all seeds advanced. Seventh-seeded Mackenzie Wilson and Shayan Shirkhodai were pushed to a tiebreaker against Waiakea’s Aaron Ideta and Michael Kawachika, where Wilson and Shirkhodai emerged victorious.

On the girls’ side, a day after upsetting sixth-seeded Erin Jyo and Taryn Fujimoto of Mililani, Punahou duo Caitlyn Arce and Celia Chang advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over King Kekaulike’s Alenette Ballesteros and Charlotte Clarke. All other seeded girls advanced.

Punahou leads the boys team standings by two points over Mid-Pacific and by four over Kalani and ‘Iolani.

Punahou also leads the girls team standings, with ILH rival ‘Iolani three points back.
