University of Hawaii sophomore Sha’tres Ah Nee is in fifth place with 2,912 points after Friday’s first day of the heptathlon at the Big West Conference Track and Field Championships in Long Beach, Calif.
Ah Nee had a 15.42 seconds in the 100 hurdles, 1.63 meters in the high jump, 9.9 meters in the shot put and a 25.62 in the 200 meters.
Long Beach State’s Riley Cooks leads with 3,435 points.
The final three events of the heptathlon will be today.

Signing are Jennifer “Michelle” Altice (throws, San Diego), Alexis Brenzil (heptathlon; Guelph, Ontario), Tatiana Desender (hurdles/sprints; London, Ontario), Tristen Dulay (sprints; Campbell High School), Madison “Maddie” Fuhrman (distance; Siverton, Ore.) and Haleigh Sudbeck (throws; Camas, Wash.).
Vulcans’ Gaspar named all-West region
Hawaii Hilo softball player Bailey Gaspar was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II all-West region first team as a designated player.
Gaspar, a sophomore from Vancouver, Wash., batted .415 with nine doubles, six home runs and 36 RBIs in 49 games this season for the Vulcans.
In PacWest games, she had a league-best .506 batting average and .807 slugging percentage.
