UH grad, 71, overcomes trials for second degree

    Karuna Joshi-Peters, 71, and her husband, Mike Peters, prepared to participate in the 105th Annual Commencement Exercises Advanced Degree Ceremony at the University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday. Joshi-Peters earned a doctorate in philosophy at the UH commencement ceremony. She also earned a Ph.D. in psychology from UH in 1992 after battling breast cancer.

The road to earning two doctorate degrees at the University of Hawaii at Manoa was a bumpy one for Karuna Joshi-Peters, who turns 72 in July. The mother of two decided on a whim to enter the university’s philosophy doctorate program after the idea popped into her head during a symphony concert in 2006. Read more
