Pac-Five won its fifth state Division II softball crown and first since 2011, while ending Nanakuli’s title run at three.
Kiara Peterson hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the fourth and pitched 42⁄3 innings of solid relief as second-seeded Pac-Five beat top-seeded Nanakuli 6-4 in the DataHouse/HHSAA Division II Softball State Championships on Saturday at Patsy Mink Stadium in Kahului.
“Naturally, I’m happy and I’m happy for the team,” said Wolfpack coach Cecil Hasegawa. “They worked really hard the whole season.”
Peterson’s fourth-inning single to right field scored Kalyn Kershner and Karley Ann Yoshioka to put Pac-Five ahead 5-3. Kershner hit a game-tying infield single earlier in the inning.
On the mound, Peterson allowed six hits and one run, which was unearned.
“I started Megan (Yoshioka) two nights in a row. I knew maybe she would tire,” Hasegawa said. “I told Kiara you need to be ready.”
The Golden Hawks, ranked No. 9 in the state, got within a run in the fifth when Keani Sonognini-Keopuhiwa’s chopper was bobbled by Peterson, which allowed Charallen Mahoe to score.
Nanakuli (17-1) then loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth on three consecutive singles. Pac-Five escaped unscathed when a soft liner was caught by shortstop Karley Ann Yoshioka, who flipped to third baseman Brazzlynn Tovio-Asato for the double play. Peterson got the next batter to line out to center field.
“If that ball went through it would have been two runs,” Hasegawa said of the double play. “Luckily, the ball was hit right at the shortstop.”
The Wolfpack (10-6-1) have six players from Hawaii Baptist, six from University, four from Hanalani and two from Damien.
Hasegawa said his players had no problem jelling as a team.
“It normally takes a couple of years to get them into it, but the whole team was in it this year,” he said.
Hasegawa added his team had 14 days from the end of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu season until the start of the state tournament on Thursday. The Wolfpack also defeated Kalani and Kamehameha-Hawaii this week.
“We had a long wait with no competition, but they were able to stay focused. Give them credit,” Hasegawa said.
Karley Ann Yoshioka, who scored three runs for Pac-Five, led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run.
In the second, Kanalei McCoy hit a two-out, two-run homer and Mahoe followed with another long ball to put the Golden Hawks up 3-1.
Pac-Five’s Tovio-Asato hit a solo homer in the third to cut the deficit to one.
In the fifth, Nanakuli got within 5-4 on a fielding error by the pitcher, but Pac-Five tacked on an insurance run on Tovio-Asato’s run-scoring single.
