Crews from the Board of Water Supply continued repairs Sunday on an 8-inch line on Kuhio Avenue at Kapuni Street.
All eastbound lanes of Kuhio Avenue remained closed between Uluniu and Liliuokalani avenues. The westbound lanes are being contra-flowed.
The proximity of other utility lines is causing the repair work to take longer than anticipated, the board said by email.
No customers are affected. Motorists are advised to be careful when traveling near the work area, to expect delays and to use alternate routes when possible.
The line broke at about 3 a.m. Saturday.
Molokai kids get new mobile lab
A new mobile laboratory on Molokai offers students a chance to conduct experiments in the field, with support from the Alaka‘ina Foundation.
The Molokai Digital Bus offers culturally grounded, hands-on environmental education in grades kindergarten through 12.
“We want the students to have a meaningful science-based outdoor experience from which they can directly study and observe their own community’s resilience to environmental hazards,” said Vaughn Vasconcellos, Alaka‘ina Foundation principal.
The first Molokai Digital Bus got going in 2010, following the lead of the Maui Digital Bus program. The Hawaii Source Education Outreach Program was funded first by the Office of Naval Research and later by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Donors to outfit the new vehicle, which launched May 3, included the Will Smith Foundation, the Atherton Family Foundation, First Hawaiian Bank Foundation, Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation, Hawaiian Electric Industries Foundation and Cooke Foundation.
Training bolsters fire ant battle
HILO >> Hawaii island residents can get pesticide training to help fight invasive little fire ants.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the County Council is expected to direct more than $96,000 in grant funds ahead of the county’s launch of a pesticide voucher program this summer.
Residents who participate in training through the Big Island Invasive Species Committee or the Hawaii Ant Lab will be eligible for vouchers.
