Officers and other dignitaries marched from the Honolulu Police Department’s main headquarters on Beretania Street to the state Capitol on Monday evening to honor Honolulu police officers killed in the line of duty.
A candelight vigil and a memorial service were held Monday night in the Capitol courtyard. The service commemorated 46 officers killed over the years in the line of duty.
The service was part of Police Week activities.
The Police Department’s Officer of the Year, Reserve Officer of the Year, Police Parent of the Year, Civilian Employee of the Year and Outstanding Citizen of the Year will be honored at the Ala Moana Beach Park’s McCoy Pavilion on Thursday. HPD employees with 25, 35 and 45 years of service to the city will also be recognized at the ceremony, which is open to the public.
Police Week is observed across the nation as a time to honor and remember law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and those who continue to serve. In 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.
