Take a walk through the history and architecture of the College Hills area of Manoa on June 11.
Malama Manoa’s annual Manoa Historic Walking Tour will take visitors along a 2-mile route past more than 60 homes dating to the 1920s and ’30s, in styles ranging from Queen Anne Victorian, Colonial Revival and Spanish Revival, to the classic bungalow. Homes by local architects C.W. Dickey, Mark Potter and Ray Morris will be featured, and at least eight historic properties will be open to visitors.
College Hills opened in 1899 on land owned by Punahou School, then known as Oahu College. As the first subdivision in Honolulu to be served by trolley, its quiet ambience was protected by restrictive covenants that banned business and industry.
The self-guided tour takes place from 8:30 a.m. until noon, with the last tour to be sent off at 10:30 a.m. from Kamanele Park at the corner of University Avenue and Kaala Street. A route map and information packet will be provided. Limited parking will be available at Mid-Pacific Institute.
Register by Friday for $35 per person. The cost is $40 starting Saturday. Walk-up registration will be available, space permitting. Visit malamamanoa.org or call 988-6181 for information.
