WAILUKU >> Jury selection has begun in the trial of a man charged with the death of his pregnant ex-girlfriend on Maui in 2014, with the prosecution saying that the defendant was the last person to see the woman alive.
The Maui News reported Tuesday that jury selection began Monday in the trial for 26-year-old Steven Capobianco. He is charged with second-degree murder in Carly “Charli” Scott’s death and second-degree arson for setting her vehicle on fire.
First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Robert Rivera said Capobianco had been with Scott the night of Feb. 9, 2014, in a remote area in east Maui, where parts of her body and blood-stained clothing were discovered days later.
Capobianco’s attorney maintains his client has been charged without a significant effort by police to find “the real killer.”

A 21-year-old Kihei man was in critical condition Monday after a motorist crossed the center of Haleakala Highway in Wailuku and collided with three oncoming vehicles, Maui police said.
The crash happened about 8:20 p.m. when a motorist heading down Haleakala Highway lost control just above Firebreak Road, police said.
Firefighters extricated the 21-year-old man from one of the vehicles and emergency responders took him to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
A minor was also taken to the hospital in good condition.
