Punahou senior Kyle Suppa’s second-round 65 helped him to a four-stroke victory in the Hickam Invitational, Sunday at Mamala Bay.
Suppa opened with a 75 Friday, but pulled into a tie for first with his 7-under-par score Saturday. He closed with a 70 for a total of 210.
Punahou teammate Andrew Chin (69) took second and Mid-Pacific Institute junior Zachary Kaneshiro (75) was another stroke back. Defending champion Jun Ho Won (70—216) was fourth, followed by Hawaii Golf Hall of Famer Brandan Kop (72—219).
Eddie Agustin (78—233) won the A flight by one shot and Derek Fukuda (78—237) captured the B flight, also by one. The senior champion was Shigeru Matsui (73—223).
Nakajima wins U.S. Open qualifier
Japan pro Toru Nakajima won a sudden-death playoff with Maui’s Kyle Hayashi to claim the U.S. Open local qualifier at Royal Ka‘anapali earlier this month.
Both golfers shot 2-under-par 69. Nakajima won with par on the first extra hole. There were 27 golfers in the field.
Two days later, Chris Keiter and Hunter Larson — both Hawaii pros — were the only golfers to break par and advanced from the local qualifier at The Club at Hokuli`a. A field of 32 participated.
There were 111 local qualifiers across the country. Top finishers advance to 12 regional qualifiers — 10 in the U.S. on June 6, one in Japan and one in England. Top finishers there play in the 116th U.S. Open, June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
Punahou senior Allisen Corpuz won the Hawaii sectional qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Open. Pepperdine senior Marissa Chow, an ‘Iolani alumna, won the Scottsdale, Ariz., qualifier. Both earned a place in the national championship, July 7-10 at CordeValle, in San Martin, Calif. The last of 25 regional qualifiers is June 3.
At the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship this week at Winged Foot in New York, Hawaii qualifiers Justin Arcano and Justin Ngan shot rounds of 67-73 in stroke-play qualifying. They tied for 53rd among 128 teams. The top 32 teams advanced to match play.
Rules session set at Moanalua Golf Club
“What if???!!,” the Hawaii State Women’s Golf Association’s second annual rules study session, will be June 20 at Moanalua Golf Club.
It runs from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and costs $15. The interactive event includes handouts, a new rules book, bag tag and lunch.
This is a continuation of last year’s “What Now?” rules session.
