A woman died and another was critically injured Sunday afternoon after the vehicle they were riding in ran off Hana Highway and plunged 200 feet off a cliff.
The incident occurred around 4:42 p.m. in an area in front of St. Peter Catholic Mission, about 4 miles from Hana, the Maui Fire Department said by email.
The vehicle landed on a lava rock outcropping surrounded by water.
Firefighters pried the women from the vehicle and airlifted the two to a designated landing site where paramedics were waiting.
One woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other woman was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Man dies after being pulled from ocean
A 64-year-old man died Sunday after he was pulled from the waters fronting the Royal Hawaiian hotel in Waikiki.
The incident was reported around 9:30 a.m., according to an Emergency Medical Services report.
Responding paramedics transported the man in critical condition to an area hospital, where he later died.
Makiki burglary suspect is due in court
A burglary suspect, whom police identified through surveillance video, has been charged and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
Police said a 31-year-old Manoa man broke into a Makiki business just before 4 a.m. May 23 and stole items.
Police said officers identified the suspect through surveillance video and arrested him Friday night at Kahala Mall.
Prosecutors charged the suspect, Louis Antone Silva IV, with second-degree burglary Saturday night.
He was being held in lieu of $40,000 bail.
