A 48-year-old man died Monday of head injuries from an early morning fight at a North School Street gas station, police said.
Police said the victim and another man were involved in an argument at the parking lot of an Aloha Island Mart at North School Street and Kamehameha IV Road in Kalihi just before 5 a.m. After the fight, the victim was treated by paramedics and taken in critical condition to a hospital, where he died.
Police chased a suspect to the Gulick Avenue bridge over the H-1 freeway.
KHON TV reported that the man threatened to jump from the overpass onto the H-1 and that officers talked with him while all westbound lanes of the H-1 were closed. The officers later wrestled the man to the ground, KHON said.
The freeway’s westbound lanes were closed for nearly an hour, according to police.
The suspect, a 19-year-old Waipahu man, was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation, police said. He was later arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.
