Moore finishes runner-up in Fiji

Hawaii’s Carissa Moore won her semifinal heat to advance into the final of the Fiji Womens Pro at Cloudbreak on Monday.

Hawaii’s Carissa Moore fell to France’s Johanne Defay in the final of the Fiji Women’s Pro by a score of 17.1 to 10.7 on Monday.

Kauai’s Bethany Hamilton lost in the semifinals to Defay, 17.47 to 11.06, in 6- to 8-foot waves at Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji.

In the quarterfinals, Moore posted a perfect 10 on a wave to go with another 9-plus score to advance past Australian Laura Evener. She then scored a 9.77 and 9.27 to oust South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag in the semifinals, 19.04 to 16.60.

Hamilton, a wild card in the event, topped Australian Nikki Van Diijk 12.33 to 11.26 in her quarterfinal matchup.

MPI’s Oley is Gatorade honoree

Mid-Pacific utilityman Alexander Oley was named the Gatorade Hawaii Baseball Player of the Year last Monday after helping the Owls to the ILH championship and state quarterfinals.

Oley, a Honolulu Star-Advertiser first-team All-State selection, batted .406 with 16 runs scored and nine RBIs. The outfielder also excelled on the mound, where he posted a 5-1 record and 2.35 ERA.

He is the fourth MPI player to receive the Gatorade award in the past five years, and ninth Owl overall.

Smith wins UTSA tournament

Keegan Smith of San Diego, Calif., knocked off top-seeded Connor Hance 6-4, 6-0 to win the Boys 18 singles title at the USTA National Selection Tournament on Monday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Top-seeded Abigail Chiu of Austin, Texas, won the Girls 18 division with a 6-3, 6-2 win over second-seeded Lexi Milunovich of New Canaan, Conn.

Jace Akagi-Okuma of Wahiawa and Seann Esaki of Honolulu finished third in boys singles. The second-seeded team of Robert Baylon and Randy Cory defeated Hance and Jake Sands 8-1 in the final. Emilee Duong and Niluka Madurawe of California claimed the girls doubles title.

The event is the highest level junior tournament hosted by the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section.
