Hawaii island police are looking for people who witnessed an incident in which a 78-year-old man was hit by a van Friday at the Keaau Transfer Station.
Police said officers have determined that Gary Ambrose of Keaau was facing west at a trash shoot to dump garbage when he was struck by a 1990 Dodge van being operated by a 66-year-old Hilo woman.
Ambrose was taken to Hilo Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The woman was arrested on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and driving under the influence, and released pending further investigation.
Police ask anyone who witnessed the incident to call the Hawaii County Police Department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311 or contact officer Casey Cabral at 961-8889 or casey.cabral@hawaiicounty.gov. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300.
Park will close to remove bees
A Maui park will be closed Thursday so a large honeybee colony can be removed from a state Civil Defense emergency siren, Maui County officials said in a news release Tuesday.
The removal of the bee colony is scheduled for all day Thursday at Haycraft Park, 399 Hauoli St. in Maalaea.
Maui County Civil Defense workers and park rangers will notify nearby residents. Salvation Army representatives will assist in getting the word out to homeless residents in the area.
The public is advised to stay away from the park until the bee colony can be safely removed, officials said.
