Keegan Smith of San Diego knocked off top-seeded Connor Hance 6-4, 6-0 to win the Boys 18 singles title at the USTA National Selection Tournament on Monday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Top-seeded Abigail Chiu of Austin, Texas, won the Girls 18 division with a 6-3, 6-2 win over second-seeded Lexi Milunovich of New Canaan, Conn.
Jace Akagi-Okuma of Wahiawa and Seann Esaki of Honolulu finished third in boys doubles. The second-seeded team of Robert Baylon and Randy Cory defeated Hance and Jake Sands 8-1 in the final. Emilee Duong and Niluka Madurawe of California claimed the girls doubles title.
The event is the highest level junior tournament hosted by the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section.
UH coed team 14th in sailing nationals
The University of Hawaii coed sailing team closed the first day of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Gill Coed National Championships in 14th place in its semifinal heat in San Diego.
The Rainbows enter today’s races with 153 points in the Eastern semifinal after scoring 59 in the A division and 94 in the B division on Tuesday. The top nine teams from the two semifinal brackets after today’s races advance to the finals starting Thursday. Old Dominion is first in the Eastern semifinal with 51 points. Tufts is in ninth with 116 points.
Trio on U.S. men’s volleyball team in Cuba
The U.S. men’s national volleyball team, with three Hawaii high school graduates on its roster, will warm up for FIVB World League play with two exhibition matches in Havana, Cuba, this month.
The roster includes setters Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) and Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani), and libero Erik Shoji (Punahou). The matches are scheduled for Saturday and Monday, the first time the U.S. has traveled to Cuba since 1995 World League play.
Weightlifting silver for Kobashigawa
Hawaii’s Brey Kobashigawa took silver at the USA Weightlifting Championships and Olympic Trials in Salt Lake City.
The ‘Iolani School graduate and University of Hawaii student had a 215 total in the 56kg weight class with a 100 snatch and 115 clean & jerk in the competition held at the Salt Palace. Darren Barnes won the class with a 240 total.
Also competing from Hawaii were Jaymen Luna and Amy Suh, both from Maui. Suh was 18th in the women’s 63kg with a 175 total and Luna did not make the top 20 in men’s 69kg.
Skateboarder Long at X Games
Honolulu’s Hunter Long makes her X Games debut Saturday when women’s skateboard park competition begins in Austin, Texas.
The 21-year-old University of Hawaii senior is one of 10 invited females from three countries in the event. Long turned pro in 2012.
Barry takes discus gold in 75-79 age group
Former ‘Iolani boys soccer coach Bob Barry continued his success on the senior track and field circuit, winning his age-group in discus at the Hayward Classic in Eugene, Ore.
Barry won the 75-79 age group with a throw of 88 feet, 8 inches at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. It is the sixth consecutive year he has attained All-America status.
