Thirteen Hawaii students are included in the third group of scholarship recipients in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The high school seniors are among 3,000 recipients of National Merit scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities in the 2016 scholarship program, according to a news release issued Wednesday.
The state’s recipients are: Sydney K. Suzuki (University of Southern California), Hawaii Baptist Academy; Brandon Chew (University of Southern California) and Jenna Tom (Carleton College), ‘Iolani School; Peter M. Johnson (Harvey Mudd College), Kalani High School; Risa C. Askerooth (Western Washington University), Tyler P. Villegas (University of Oklahoma), Mililani High School; Allisen S. Corpuz, Nicholas P. Gardetto and Mark P. Klein (University of Southern California), Kailea A. Moseley (University of Central Florida) and Daniel A. Ota (Creighton University), Punahou School; Annie Oh (Tufts University), Sacred Hearts Academy High School; and Kailani N. Linton (Purdue University), St. Andrew’s Priory School.
The college-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. An additional group of about 1,000 college-sponsored scholars will be announced July 18.
On April 20 more than 1,000 recipients of corporate-sponsored scholarship awards were named. The second group — winners of a one-time $2,500 scholarship — was announced May 11. In all, about 7,500 students will have won National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million in this year’s competition.
