A high-surf advisory remains in effect until at least 6 p.m. today for the south shores of all islands.
The National Weather Service said a south swell should bring surf of 5 to 8 feet.
Strong breaking waves and currents will make swimming dangerous, the agency said.
Also, a small-craft advisory remains in effect until at least 6 p.m. Tuesday for the Pailolo (Molokai-Maui) and Alenuihaha (Maui-Big Isle) channels, Maalaea Bay on Maui and waters southwest and southeast of the Big Island. Winds from 29 to 33 mph and seas of 7 to 10 feet are expected today, the weather service said.
Plea deal made in baby’s death
HILO >> A former boxer has taken a plea deal in the beating death of an 18-month-old girl. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Xavier Cortez Jr. pleaded no contest Thursday to a first-degree assault charge, avoiding a trial on a second-degree murder charge. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
Court-appointed attorney Keith Shigetomi said his client can ask for probation and time served since his Jan. 28, 2014, arrest. Deputy Prosecutor Rick Damerville said he doesn’t expect a sentence of time served, and that Cortez will be ordered to pay $54,000 in restitution. Sommer Ferreira was strangled to death shortly after her 18-month-old daughter died in January 2011.
Uncooperative witnesses led to the plea deal in the toddler’s case and a dismissal with the possibility of refiling in Ferreira’s death.
SUV driven off 200-foot cliff
A Maui man suffered only minor scratches Saturday when his SUV went off a 200-foot cliff in Kahakuloa, fire officials said. The report was called in at 1:31 a.m. by a couple parked at the lookout on the Kahului side of Makamakaole Gulch, Fire Service Chief Edward Taomoto said by email. They heard branches cracking after a vehicle passed them going north.
Responding rescue crews couldn’t see anything except for a hole in the brush, but could hear someone yelling down below. Crews rappelled down the steep slope and found a Nissan SUV on a ledge about 200 feet down. A 33-year-old man from Kahakuloa was standing outside of the vehicle and appeared in good condition with minor scratches, Taomoto said. No one else was in the SUV.
