A surfer sustained a puncture wound from a shark Wednesday, prompting the state to close a 2-mile stretch of coastline on southeast Kauai.
State conservation enforcement officials were asking the public to stay out of the water at Kalapaki Beach until noon Thursday.
Officials said the man was bitten on the arm while paddling out at about 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. He drove himself to the hospital, where he was treated and released.
The surfer said he was 25 to 35 yards off Kalapaki Beach when the shark, about 3 to 4 feet long, bit him, DLNR said.
The attack is the fifth this year in the Hawaiian Islands and the second off Kauai, according to a DLNR webpage.
The other Kauai attack also involved a surfer. On Jan. 28 at about 2 p.m., the man said he received lacerations on both hands from a 5- to 10-foot shark in waters off Black Pot Beach in Hanalei.
The other three attacks occurred on Maui:
>> On May 3, a person was floating in 10 to 15 feet of water about 30 to 50 yards off Wailea Beach when a shark inflicted minor lacerations to the right shoulder.
>> On March 31 at about 11 a.m., a snorkeler received minor cuts to the left foot while 400 to 450 yards off Olowalu. The snorkeler said the shark was 10 to 15 feet long.
>> On Jan. 23, a shark bit the board of a stand-up paddleboarder about 150 to 200 yards from Wailea Beach Point in 30 feet of water.
