Imanas Tei in Moiliili is the only Japanese restaurant in Hawaii that made the TimeOut.com list of the best Japanese restaurants in the country, and it ranked at No. 5.

The restaurant, at 2626 S. King St. near University Avenue, placed behind No. 1 Raku in Las Vegas, second-ranked Sushi Yasuda in New York, Sushi Ran in San Francisco and Brushstroke in New York.

Thirteen other Japanese restaurants in the U.S. were ranked beneath Imanas.

The online and printed publication cited Imanas Tei for its fresh seafood “so recently plucked from the ocean that it quivers and glistens on the plate,” as well as its shabu-shabu and sake offerings.

Methodology used by TimeOut.com to determine the restaurants on the list as well as their rankings was not disclosed.

Fried rice — free!

If you’re hungry Friday morning, drive by the real estate company Locations LLC, 614 Kapahulu Ave., from 7 to 8:30 a.m. for a bowl of Side Street Inn fried rice.

The annual “Mahalo Free Fried Rice Event” celebrates the company’s sixth straight win as best real estate company in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Hawaii’s Best awards. Neighboring Side Street Inn on da Strip was a winner as well, so it’s a double celebration.

Pull into the parking lot and you’ll be handed your container of rice.
