Park workers discovered damage Wednesday morning to a restroom at Kahuku District Park — the latest of several city park facilities targeted by vandals this year.
According to the city, staff arriving for work found the men’s restroom sink, toilet, urinal and a number of pipes damaged and destroyed. Workers said it looked like someone used a sledgehammer to do the damage. Police were called, and a criminal property damage report was made.
The city said repairs have begun, but the cost hasn’t yet been determined.
Among the most recent incidents of vandalism at city park facilities: Portable toilets were torched at Kaiaka Beach Park in Haleiwa; vandals smashed and destroyed a toilet at the busiest comfort station at Ala Moana Beach Park just days after it was refurbished; a sink in the men’s restroom at Fern Community Park in Kalihi was destroyed; and one of three comfort stations at Keehi Lagoon, heavily used by canoe paddlers and other park visitors, was destroyed by fire.
