How is this for a free pass?
Former University of Hawaii quarterback Sean Schroeder is hosting a camp for high-school-aged passers — and receivers — at UH’s T.C. Ching Athletic Complex on June 25.
“It’s a free camp,” said Schroeder, whose not-for-profit organization, 808 Passing Academy, and sponsors will cover expenses and insurance. The camp is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The camp’s coaching staff includes former UH standouts Ashley Lelie, Garrett Gabriel, Miah Ostrowski, Jeremy Higgins, Cayman Shutter, Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson and Craig Cofer. Vince Passas, who once coached Marcus Mariota, is a featured instructor.
“It’s former players giving back to the next generation,” Schroeder said.
Schroeder transferred to UH in August 2012 after earning a bachelor’s degree at Duke. He played two UH seasons while completing work on a master’s degree.
“Looking back, football has played a huge role in my life,” said Schroeder, who works for an investment company in California. “What it did was open the doors by allowing me to get an education. If we can help kids attain that goal of attending a university and getting an education, it’ll do a lot of good for their lives and, hopefully, the community. They can come back and give to the community.”
Although Schroeder attended UH for only three semesters, he said, “Hawaii will always mean a lot to me. It allowed me to fulfill a life-long dream. That’s my goal, I guess, to pay it forward.”
He added: “It’s not just me. It’s a community effort. Hopefully, we can do the same for the kids in the community. We’re looking forward to a successful camp and kids who are hungry to learn. We’re looking for those kids chasing the dream of playing at the next level.”
