The University of Hawaii’s Katie Spieler and Alex Porlier Langlois were announced as nominees for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year Award on Tuesday.
Spieler and Porlier Langlois are among 517 individuals up for the award, which honors graduating female senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. The top 30 candidates will be announced in August.
Spieler led the Rainbow Wahine to the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships this past season and finished her collegiate career as the program’s all-time individual wins leader with 102 victories and a .713 win percentage. She earned a 4.0 grade-point average as a graduate student in the Shidler College of Business and received an accelerated master’s degree in accounting.
Porlier Langlois was the first shot put thrower to represent the UH track and field team at the NCAA Championships in 2015, and also made an appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships in May. She broke her own outdoor shot put record with a mark of 54-2.75 and finished second at this year’s Big West Championships in both the shot put and discus. Porlier Langlois is also a four-time Big West Scholar-Athlete and is graduating this spring with a degree in animal science.
