The city Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a 35-year-old Waianae man killed early Sunday morning in a car crash near Ko Olina as Lawrence Lucero.
Police said Lucero was speeding toward Waianae on Farrington Highway at about 2 a.m. when he lost control of his car, which traveled up an embankment and hit a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene near Aliinui Drive.
He was Oahu’s 22nd traffic fatality this year, compared with 27 at this time last year.
Arson suspect makes court appearance
A 21-year-old Waipahu man made his initial Honolulu District Court appearance Monday after being charged with starting a house fire that injured his younger sister Friday.
Mark Rivera of Hanawai Circle was charged with fourth-degree arson and was being held, unable to post $2,000 bail.
Police said Rivera started a fire at about 7:30 a.m. Friday, causing minor injuries to his 17-year-old sister.
He fled and was later located by a police patrol. Police arrested Rivera at his home initially on suspicion of second- degree attempted murder, but the case was downgraded.
Maui police looking for Wailuku wallet thief
Maui police are looking for a man who entered a vehicle parked in a Main Street garage in Wailuku on Oct. 13 and took a wallet.
Police said the man attempted to use a credit card from the wallet at multiple ATM locations in Wailuku.
The suspect is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing about 250 pounds. He has black hair.
The Maui Police Department is asking the public to call 244-6400 with any information. Detective Dennis Clifton is assigned to the case.
