Hawaii’s teams for this summer’s major junior team events have been chosen. Players earned their spots based on points collected in Hawaii State Junior Golf Association tournaments ending this month.
The Junior America’s Cup teams will be Jun Ho Won, Shon Katahira, Evan Kawai and Remington Hirano for the boys and Allysha Mae Mateo, Claire Choi, Miki Manta and Keila Baladad for the girls.
Zachary Kaneshiro, Justin Ngan, Justin Arcano and Pono Yanagi are heading to the Eddie Hogan Cup. Lorraine Char, Karissa Kilby, Alanis Sakuma and Naomi Wong will play for Hawaii at the Mary Cave Cup.
The Japan High School Golf Association has again invited four HSJGA golfers to compete in its High School Golf Championship. The top finishers of the Boys and Girls 13-14 and 15-18 divisions were selected. Those winners were Davis Lee and Kilby (13-14), and Kawai and Mateo (15-18). They travel to Ube 72 Country Club in Ajisu, Japan, for the tournament next month.
Choi, Nam win at Turtle Bay qualifier
Claire Choi and Malia Nam both shot 73 Tuesday to claim co-medalist honors at the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur qualifier at Turtle Bay’s Palmer Course.
Choi, part of Punahou’s state championship team this year, and Nam, who was fourth individually, will represent Hawaii later this month in the national championship at Ridgewood Country Club, in Paramus, N.J.
They will be joined by recent Mililani graduate Mari Nishiura, who shot 75 at the qualifier. Nishiura won the inaugural Manoa Cup women’s division earlier this month.
Allysha Mae Mateo and Lorraine Char are first and second alternates, after 77s.
Previous Girls Junior Am champs include Nancy Lopez (1972 and ’74) and Lexi Thompson (2008).
Min to play at U.S. Women’s Amateur
Gonzaga senior Ciera Min, a 2013 Waiakea graduate, won a U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifying tournament, earning her first-ever bid to the prestigious event held in August.
Min shot a 5-under 67 to take medalist honors at the June 28 qualifier at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore. She earned a spot at the U.S. Women’s Amateur, which will be held Aug. 1-7 at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa.
Watanabe wins 39th Pua Melia
Cathy Watanabe won the 39th Pua Melia Invitational Friday at Olomana Golf Links. Watanabe fired an 84 to take low-gross honors. Jacqueline Shirai’s 67 was good for low-net honors.
Faith Davis finished a shot behind Watanabe, Sally Crowell (68) and OK Cashdollar (69) were the only other net scores in the 60s.
