Volleyball’s mantra has long been “Grow the Game.”
But what happens when that growth turns into an event outgrowing its location?
For Ed Chun and Sivan Leoni, it means an opportunity to grow the sport in a new direction … about 30 miles northwest from the original home of the Lanikai Open grass volleyball tournament. The inaugural T2 Turtle Bay Tournament is set for Saturday.

The vision of two of the organizers from Lanikai Athletic Club was to expand the grass volleyball tournament to include family, food and music.
“It’s a big family event for everyone to enjoy,” said Chun, CEO and head coach at Lanikai Athletic Club.”It’s something to bring the community together to celebrate through sport, food and music. It’s a very nice facility. It’s summer.
“We did kind of outgrow Lanikai (community park) and we didn’t want to add to the traffic problems they’ve been dealing with. The Lanikai Open was good to us for many years. We wanted to take that same concept, do it on a larger scale that can handle it.”
The Turtle Bay venue will be able to handle more than 30 courts. The field, with divisions from 12-under through adult masters, will be capped at 150 four-person teams.
Sponsoring T2 includes Leoni, a former University of Hawaii volleyball player from the 1990s and current head boys volleyball coach at Kalaheo, who is in charge of the volleyball segment. Former NFL standout and Super Bowl champion Ma’ake Kemoeatu is the community lead and Kaneala Makainai, former lead singer of SoulFree, is the entertainment lead. Local bands will be playing throughout the day on Turtle Bay’s Grand Lawn, food trucks will be on site for dining options and Kama’aina Kids will host a “Keiki Fun in the Sun” zone with various activities.
The alcohol-free event includes a free concert from 4-6 p.m. There also is a 21-and-over after-party concert at Surfer, The Bar beginning at 9 p.m.
