Hawaii County police said Thursday that an autopsy that was performed on a 38-year-old Pahoa man who died in police custody ruled out foul play.
Clarence Hatori collapsed June 16 in the Hilo police cellblock and was taken to the Hilo Medical Center.
Hatori was pronounced dead June 30.
The medical examiner ruled out foul play July 1 while performing the autopsy, but will await toxicology test results and additional analysis before making a determination as to cause of death.
Detectives are continuing the investigation, which is classified as a coroner’s inquest.
Hatori had turned himself in on a contempt of court charge and was arrested for investigation of robbery, police said.
Maui brush fire is 80% to 90% contained
After a week, Maui firefighters have nearly contained a brush fire that has blackened 4,700 acres since Saturday in Maalaea, over the West Maui Mountains to Ukumehame.
The once-raging fire was called 80 to 90 percent contained Thursday.
Two fire units continued to patrol and mop up hot spots on the Maalaea side of the fire and in a problem area near the Ukumehame Firing Range, Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto reported in a news release.
Small pockets of smoldering material will continue burning for several more days before the fire will be called extinguished, fire officials said.
