Applications are being accepted for the third annual Red Bull Party Wave, set for Aug. 28 at Queens Beach in Waikiki.
Organizers said they will accept the first 20 “quality team applications” for the event, which requires participants to dress in themed costumes and perform skits on the beach before heading into the water to surf as a team. This year’s competition will also serve as the final event of the annual Duke’s OceanFest, a weeklong festival held in honor of legendary Hawaiian waterman Duke Kahanamoku.
According to official Party Wave rules, teams must build their own watercraft with a creative theme within the designated time period. Each craft must be entirely self-powered. Although team members can use paddles, no sails or motorized elements are allowed. All materials used must float and be environmentally friendly.
In addition, all teams must have a minimum of three members at least 16 years old, and everyone must take part in paddling out and surfing at least one wave together. Teams will be judged on craft creativity, team showmanship/costume quality and surfing performance.
