Hawaii’s John John Florence used a 7.33 score in a heat restart to edge Jordy Smith of South Africa in the opening quarterfinal of the J-Bay Open on Sunday.
Florence, ranked No. 2 in the world, finished with a 10.70 to Smith’s 10.50 in the only quarterfinal run during deteriorating conditions in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. The other three quarterfinals of Stop No. 6 on the Samsung Galaxy World Surf League World Championship Tour are scheduled for today.
U.S. junior men’s team wins U21 gold
The U.S. men’s junior national volleyball team won the gold medal Sunday, defeating Cuba 3-1 in the U21 NORCECA Continental Championship in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.
University of Hawaii rising sophomore setter Joe Worsley played in Sets 2 and 3 of the 25-17, 29-27, 19-25, 25-22 victory for the U.S. (4-0) over previously undefeated Cuba (4-1). Rainbow Warrior incoming freshman hitter Austin Matautia (Moanalua) did not play.
U.S. women take bronze at Pan Am Cup
Behind setter Micha Hancock’s record-setting 12 aces, the U.S. defeated Cuba 3-1 to earn the bronze medal at the XV Women’s Pan American Cup of volleyball on Sunday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
University of Hawaii incoming senior opposite Nikki Taylor had one kill when playing in Set 1 in the 20-25, 25-9, 25-15, 25-9 victory at Palacio de Voleibol.
