A Kauai County bus broadsided a vehicle in Wailua on Tuesday, injuring three people, including two women from Australia who were airlifted to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu in critical condition.
According to a county news release, at 9:18 p.m. Tuesday in Wailua a county bus operated by a 77-year-old driver was traveling south on Kuhio Highway near the entrance of Smith’s Luau when it broadsided a Nissan Altima attempting to cross the highway. Four Australian visitors were inside the Nissan at the time of the crash.
Kauai police said the bus driver suffered nonlife-threatening arm injuries and was transported by a private vehicle to Wilcox Hospital, where he was treated and released.
There were six passengers in the bus. None were injured.
The driver of the sedan, a 44-year-old woman, and the front-seat passenger, a 12-year-old girl, were uninjured. Police said the two back-seat female passengers, ages 60 and 16, were transported to Wilcox Hospital before they were flown to Queen’s. Police spokeswoman Sarah Blane said Wednesday they were stable, but in critical condition, in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
