Highgate, the majority owner of the Pacific Beach Hotel, has pushed back the target date to complete $115 million in property renovations.
The property, which will continue to operate during renovations, is expected to reopen as the ‘Alohilani Resort at Waikiki Beach in the fall of 2017. Earlier in the week, Highgate sent out a press release saying that the improvements and renaming would conclude by next summer.
The 18-month renovation began in March with a revamping of the property’s 839 guest rooms and suites. Redevelopment will enter its second phase next month with major improvements to the hotel’s exterior facade and public areas.
Redevelopment plans began when Highgate took over management of the property for former majority owner HTH Corp. in November 2012.
Honolulu senior housing near capacity
Senior housing in Honolulu was 95.2 percent full in the second quarter as Hawaii’s baby boomers reach retirement age, a new report shows.
That compares with the national average of 89.7 percent.
A study by the National Investment Center for Senior Housing & Care said there were 1,857 senior housing units in Honolulu in the quarter, with 90 of those units unoccupied. The average monthly rental rate for the units, which includes assisted living and nursing care, was $4,867. That was substantially higher than the national average of $3,595.
The organization studies current occupancy, inventory and rental rates in 140 senior housing markets nationwide.
Bankoh offering Samsung Pay, Android Pay
Bank of Hawaii is now offering its debit card customers, with consumer accounts in Hawaii, access to Samsung Pay, the mobile payment service from Samsung, and Android Pay, the mobile payment service from Google.
Samsung Pay utilizes tokenization technology, which substitutes sensitive account information with a unique, one-time transaction code for each purchase. Transactions are verified by fingerprint identification on the mobile device, and the system does not store customer account information on the device. Even if a retailer is breached, the customer’s data will be unusable.
With Android Pay, the customer’s card number is never stored on the physical device. When you shop at a merchant, Android Pay does not send your actual credit or debit card number with your payment. Instead, a virtual account number along with a one-time transaction-specific security code is used to process payments.
