The Coast Guard was searching for a plane Thursday night that had disappeared off the radar.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Melissa McKenzie said Coast Guard officials received information at about 3:15 p.m. that a dual-engine aircraft with two people aboard reported an in-flight emergency to the Honolulu Airport’s control facility.
Shortly afterward the aircraft lost contact with the tower, she said.
The flight from Maui was headed to Kona. The plane was last known to be 25 miles northwest of Kona.
Woman charged with robbery in Waikiki
A 37-year-old woman with no local address was charged Wednesday night with robbing a Waikiki business.
Rosslyn Howard was arrested at 6:57 a.m. Wednesday on Kalia Road on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
Police said Howard used physical force against a 50-year-old woman on Kalia Road while allegedly stealing from the business at about 6:39 a.m. Wednesday.
Bail was set at $15,000.
Body identified as missing Big Isle man
Hawaii County police Thursday identified the body of a man found June 25 in South Kohala as 64-year-old Michael John David of Pahoa.
David had been reported missing and was last seen in Kalapana on May 20.
His body was found on the side of Kawaihae Road.
Police said the autopsy conducted June 30 found no signs of foul play.
The exact cause of death was deferred pending the results of further testing.
4 escape from burning house in Waipahu
Four people escaped without injury from a burning Waipahu home Thursday afternoon.
Nine companies with 34 firefighters responded to the 3:35 p.m. fire at 94-111 Poohuku Way in Kunia.
The first company arrived at 3:39 p.m. and found smoke and flames coming from the garage of the two-story home.
Firefighters used tools to forcibly enter the structure. The fire was confined to the garage, Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins said in a news release.
The blaze was fully extinguished by 3:55 p.m.
The occupants of the house smelled smoke emanating from the garage and got out of the house on their own.
Damage was estimated at $40,000 to the structure and $5,000 to the contents.
