We in Hawaii love to root for our “big league bruddahs” — but in recent years, it’s been mainly in pro baseball or on the football field.
So it’s with cautious enthusiasm, if there is such a thing, that we cheer on Stefan Jankovic, the University of Hawaii standout from last season who’s got his sizable foot in the door with the NBA’s Miami Heat.
“Janks” just signed a free-agent contract with the team, which should see him at least through fall training camp. But competition will be fierce among at least 15 others who are in his similar situation to make the 15-man cut for the Heat’s regular-season roster. Let the rooting begin anew.
Learn lesson from corruption cases
Allegations against Brian Ahakuelo, head of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1260, sound depressingly familiar.
State and federal agencies have begun a criminal investigation into whether Ahakeulo used union money to pay for personal expenses and putting family members on the payroll.
Similar activity tripped up Albert Hee of Waimana Enterprises, and several leaders of local public charter schools. Surely these cases should be a stern reminder for anyone responsible for an organization’s bank account — it’s not your money, so don’t help yourself.
