Hawaii’s John John Florence was defeated by three-time WSL champion Mick Fanning of Australia on the final of the J-Bay Open at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.
Florence advanced to the final of the World Surf League Championship Tour’s sixth stop after defeating Josh Kerr of Australia, 16.50-14.43, in the earlier semifinal. He lost to Fanning 17.70-17-13 in the final.
Florence is in second place on the WSL Jeep Leaderboard with 31.900 points. Australia’s Matt Wilson is first at 34.250.
Crabbs advance at Manhattan Beach Open
Hawaii’s Taylor and Trevor Crabb advanced to today’s final of the AVP Manhattan Beach Open with an upset of top-seeded Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson on Saturday.
The fourth-seeded Crabbs swept Gibb-Patterson, 21-19, 21-18. In the other fourth-round match, Hawaii’s Tri Bourne and partner John Hayden, seeded third, lost to second-seeded Phil Dalhausser-Nick Lucena, 21-18, 21-12.
Bourne-Haden advance to today’s semifinals against the Crabbs with a 21-19, 21-15 win over Ryan Doherty-John Mayer in the contenders bracket round 5.
In the women’s bracket, former University of Hawaii All-American Brittany Tiegs and partner Jace Pardon tied for ninth.
Tinman deadline coming up
Registration for the 36th Tinman triathlon is Tuesday.
The race, which includes at 750-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run, is Sunday, July 24. The cost is $140 for individuals and $180 for three-person teams.

Tokunaga to be QB Club’s next speaker
Eric Tokunaga, a scout for the Texas Rangers and head coach of the Farrington High School varsity baseball team, is set to speak at the Honolulu Quarterback Club on Monday.
Tokunaga, a member of the 1980 University of Hawaii baseball team that went to the College World Series, also coached the Punahou JV softball and baseball teams.
His scouting career began with the Kansas City Royals and was followed by the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of the Nippon Baseball League. He returned to the MLB to scout for the San Francisco Giants before his current stint with the Rangers.
Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Maple Garden Restaurant and costs $16 per person. The program begins at noon.
