A Colorado woman, 63, apparently drowned Friday while snorkeling at Hanakaape Bay in Poipu, Kauai.
Her identity has not been released.
The woman was snorkeling in the bay at about 10 a.m. when she was discovered unresponsive. Firefighters from Koloa arrived to find bystanders pulling the woman to shore.
Firefighters performed CPR and assisted medics as she was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Hospital joins naval exercise
Hilo Medical Center took part in a disaster simulation exercise last week as part of the Rim of the Pacific naval exercises.
The scenario involved 20 patients, 12 of them in critical condition, from a magnitude-7.9 earthquake, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports.
Thursday’s exercise involved all of the hospital’s medical residents.
The hospital called in Army helicopters to transport some of the simulated patients to Honolulu.
