University of Hawaii women’s volleyball coach Dave Shoji was named “Coach of the Decade” for the 1980s in a new book about the history of NCAA men’s and women’s volleyball.
“NCAA Volleyball History” was released online at amazon.com Wednesday night and names Shoji as the top coach for the 1980s. His Rainbow Wahine teams won NCAA championships in 1982, 1983 and 1987.
Several UH and Hawaii-born players were included on the all-decade teams. Named for the women’s 1980s team were Deitre Collins, Kori Pulaski and Teee Williams.
Named to the men’s all-1980s team were Matt Rigg (Punahou/Pepperdine) and Trevor Schirman (Punahou/UCLA). On the men’s all-1990s team were Yuval Katz (UH), Mike Lambert (Punahou/Stanford) and Stein Metzger (Punahou/UCLA). The men’s all-2000s team included Brad Lawson (‘Iolani/Stanford).
The Wahine NCAA title team of 1983 was ranked No. 5 for the pre-rally scoring era (1981-2000). Ahead of Hawaii were Long Beach State (1998), Nebraska (2000), Stanford (1996) and UCLA (1990).

Ohana Cup rugby at Aloha Stadium
International sides from Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Canada, Australia and Hawaii headline next month’s Ohana Cup Rugby League Festival at Aloha Stadium.
The two-day event opens at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug., 15, with the jam session concert featuring Kapena, Willie K. and drum and dance groups from Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji and Hawaii. On Saturday, Aug. 16, gates open at 2:30 p.m. with matches starting at 4 p.m.
Two-day passes are $40 with single-day tickets at $25 for adults, $20 for military and $15 for children 6-12; there is no charge for children 5 and under.

5 from Hawaii make Junior Pan-Am Games
Five athletes from Kachi Karate Hawaii will compete in the Junior Pan American Games to be held Aug. 26-28 in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The athletes are Rey Chinen (16-17 age division), Andrew Minton (14-15), Joelle Inciong (12-13), Krislyn Dote (12-13) and Macki Ancheta (12-13).
