A 50-year-old California visitor spent Wednesday night in Molokai’s Waikolu Valley after he got lost while biking.
Molokai firefighters began searching for the visitor from Mountain View, Calif., at 7:19 p.m. when he failed to return his bike to the rental company.
Police and fire crews found the bike chained to a tree where Forest Reserve Road connects with the Makakupaia Trail. Crews searched along the Makakupaia Trail to the Nature Conservancy’s “Boardwalk” but suspended the search at midnight after finding no other clues.
When the search resumed Thursday, police found the man waiting at the bike. The visitor said that after he got lost Wednesday afternoon, he decided to bed down on the trail for the night rather than risk walking in the dark. He became lost after he left the trail on foot and somehow ended up down in Waikolu Valley. At daybreak he found his way back to where he left the bicycle.
No medical attention was needed.
