Pearl City’s Mariel Galdiano shot 6 under par to take the lead in the second round of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Open on Tuesday in Springfield, Pa. Galdiano is two strokes above California’s Lucy Li with a score of 133 and will face today’s 7:15 a.m. playoff winner in match play.
Honolulu’s Kacie Komoto also advanced after earning a playoff spot. Komoto is currently tied for 60th place at 147 strokes. She will face South Korea’s Hye-Jin Choi today.
Three local golfers failed to qualify for today’s round of 64. Honolulu’s Rose Huang and Hilo’s Ciera Min both shot 149 and Zoey Akagi-Bustin of Honolulu posted a 166.
Go Nuts clinches spot in semifinals
The Go Nuts (Pacific Southwest) baseball team earned a 7-3 victory over the Southwest team from Florence, Ala., at the 12U Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Md., on Tuesday. They secured a spot in Friday’s semifinals with the win.
J.B. Gonsalves earned the win on the mound, pitching 51⁄3 innings and allowing eight hits and three runs with one strikeout. Jameson Hussy went 3-for-3 at the plate and also hit his third home run of the tournament to lead Go Nuts’ offense. Kamaehu Sanchez earned the Ron Tellefsen MVP award for his defensive play.
Go Nuts (3-0) clinched the top seed in the American pool and will finish pool play today against South East Denver, Colo.
Local duo falls short at Rip Curl Cup
Hawaii’s Mason Ho and Clay Marzo fell to Indonesian surfer Mega Semadhi at the 2016 Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang in Bali, Indonesia on Tuesday. Semadhi scored a 19.00 to edge American surfer Damien Hobgood (16.60), while Ho placed third with a score of 15.50, and Marzo finished fourth (4.00).
