Fire damages Discovery Bay apartment
Honolulu firefighters extinguished an 11th-floor apartment fire Wednesday at the Discovery Bay condominium building in Waikiki.
At 7:18 p.m. 34 firefighters arrived at Discovery Bay, 1778 Ala Moana Blvd. Smoke and flames emanated from a unit on the 11th floor, according to a news release by Capt. David Jenkins, spokesman of the Honolulu Fire Department.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze at 7:32 p.m. Jenkins said a resident was home at the time of the fire. “He was alerted to the fire by popping noises, saw the flames and was able to escape without injury,” Jenkins said.
The fire started on the lanai of the unit and spread to part of a bedroom, the release said.
The blaze activated the building’s fire alarm system, and residents evacuated before firefighters arrived. Damage was estimated at $45,000 to the structure and its contents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
