A 57-year-old retired Honolulu police sergeant pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree assault in the accidental shooting of a bartender last year.
Sgt. Anson Kimura, who retired from the police force with 25 years of service in May 2015, will be sentenced by Circuit Judge Colette Garibaldi on Oct. 19.
Kimura was charged with second-degree assault in connection with the April 3, 2015, shooting at King’s Sports Bar on South King Street when he was off duty.
Deputy Prosecutor Ayla Weiss said her office will seek the maximum jail term of five years. Defense attorney Thomas Otake said he will seek probation for Kimura.
Kimura is free after posting $5,000 bail.
Police said a 41-year-old female bartender was shot in the stomach when Kimura’s handgun accidentally discharged.
He was placed on restricted duty until he retired a month after the shooting.
The Police Department is conducting an internal investigation.
EPA fines due as governments close cesspools
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency investigations are prompting the closure of government-owned large-capacity cesspools on Maui and Hawaii island.
The EPA said Monday that Hawaii County closed three illegal cesspools at the Hilo Drag Strip and the Hilo Trap and Skeet Range. The county is paying a $105,000 fine for the cesspools.
Maui County closed an illegal cesspool at the Maui Raceway Track and will pay a $33,000 fine.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources closed six illegal cesspools serving 12 rental cabins at Maui’s Waia- napanapa State Park near Hana. The department will pay a $50,000 fine.
The EPA required existing large cesspools, which discharge untreated sewage from buildings serving 20 or more people per day, to close in 2005, and prohibited new ones after 2000.
Police identify victim of crash on Valley Isle
Maui police Monday identified the 34-year-old man killed Saturday after his pickup truck overturned in Olowalu.
Brenson Rosario was not wearing a seat belt when the gray Ford F-150 truck failed to make a left turn on Honoapiilani Highway fronting Olowalu Store and hit a guardrail, police said.
The pickup truck traveled across the oncoming lane and into a second guardrail, overturned and landed on Rosario, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
