Wailuku’s Central East Maui team advanced to the semifinals of the Little League Baseball West Regional Tournament in San Bernardino, Calif., with a 2-0 record.
Keoni Painter went 2-for-3 at bat and struck out eight batters over four innings in Sunday’s 8-0 victory over Las Vegas.
Wehiwa Aloy secured Wailuku’s 5-2 win over Santa Clara (Utah) with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning on Monday. Matthew Dinae earned the win on the mound and recorded nine strikeouts and two walks over 51⁄3 innings.
Wailuku’s semifinal matchup against Southern California’s Chula Vista team (2-0) will be televised live on Thursday at 3 p.m. on ESPN.
Maui team clinches Little League title
The Central East Maui Little League team edged West Seoul 5-1 for the Intermediate 50/70 Baseball World Series Championship game on Sunday in Livermore, Calif.
Tiger Caulford hit an RBI double in the first inning to help the Wailuku team take a 3-0 lead. Jarrett Harper pitched 41⁄3 innings and allowed five hits with two strikeouts and one walk to earn the win. Khaku Dudoit closed out with five strikeouts and two walks. Dudoit also hit a double in the win.
10U Hawaii Diamonds’ season ends
The Hawaii Diamonds split their final two games in pool play on Tuesday and failed to advance at the 10U Cal Ripken World Series in West Palm Beach, Fla.
The Diamonds defeated Longwood, Fla., 5-3, but dropped to 2-2 after a 15-6 loss to Willamette Valley, Ore. The Diamonds finished in a three-way tie with Oregon and Indiana, but were eliminated before the quarterfinals after multiple tiebreakers.
Chaminade tennis adds 3 to roster
Chaminade women’s tennis coach Ty Aki announced Tuesday three local graduates will join the Silverswords for the 2017 season. McKinley doubles partners Cai Yan Fang and Tomomi Kohno will join Pearl City’s Elyssa Shirai on the Silverswords roster.
Fang and Kohno earned the Oahu Interscholastic Association regular-season doubles title and helped the Tigers finish second in the conference. Kohno was also named to the OIA East Division First Team. Shirai helped the Chargers earn second in the OIA West and was named to the All-OIA Second Team.
