The University of Hawaii women’s soccer team blanked Division II Tusculum (Tenn.) 6-0 in an exhibition match on Friday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Waianae graduate and junior forward Sonest Furtado scored two goals, recording her first within the first 10 minutes. Sophomore Kellsie Gleason, who also scored twice, followed with a shot in the upper right corner as the Rainbow Wahine secured a 2-0 halftime lead. UH senior T.J. Reyno and junior Keala Parker-Lee also recorded goals in the win.
The Rainbow Wahine will open their season against Oregon at 7 p.m. Friday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Kona’s Dorian wins in Maldives
Big wave surfer and Kona native Shane Dorian beat out fellow Hawaii surfer Jamie O’Brien to clinch the twin fin division at the Four Seasons Maldives’ Surfing Champion’s Trophy at Kuda Huraa on Friday.
Dorian posted a 16.24 in the final heat and won the event for the second consecutive year. Bethany Hamilton competed in the women’s twin fin division for the first time but didn’t advance to the semifinals.
Thunder Baseball shuts out Iowa
The Thunder Baseball (Hawaii) team dominated Davenport, Iowa, and enforced the mercy rule in an 11-0 victory at the 13U Babe Ruth World Series in Ottumwa, Iowa, on Friday.
Michael Yamaguchi didn’t give up a hit in three innings and recorded five strikeouts with no walks to earn the win on the mound. Jayton Pang led the Thunder’s offense with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. The Pearl City squad (2-0) will face Spokane, Wash. (1-0), in pool play today at 12:30 p.m.
Diamonds finish fifth in Florida
The Hawaii Diamonds edged Bryant, Ark., 6-3 in the Iron Bracket Championship at the 10U Cal Ripken World Series in Palm Garden, Fla., on Friday. The Diamonds (5-2) finished fifth overall in the tournament.
Mariah Antoque was named Player of the Game and went 2-for-2 at bat with a double and RBI. Teammate Shonty Passi was named to the all-tournament team and Skyler Unebasami earned all-defensive team honors. The Diamonds also received the World Series Sportsmanship Award.
Central East Maui falls to Nevada
Nevada’s Mountain Ridge team avenged Sunday’s 8-0 loss with a 9-0 win over Central East Maui in the Little League Baseball West Region Tournament on Friday in San Bernardino, Calif. Nevada (3-1) advances to today’s West Region championship game against Chula Vista, Calif. (3-0).
Central East Maui (2-2) struggled at the plate, as Nevada pitcher Garrett Cutting posted 11 strikeouts with no walks and one hit. Keoni Painter allowed four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts in the loss. Danelle Daniels recorded Central East Maui’s single hit.
