Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, with entertainment and a number of activities at the Kilauea Visitor Center on Hawaii island in late August.
Some 14 national parks and 21 national monuments were transferred from the Department of Interior to the National Park Service, with the passage of the Organic Act of 1916.
The National Park Service oversees the operation of a number of parks in Hawaii, including Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, Haleakala National Park, Kalaupapa National Historic Park and Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau, as well as national monuments such as the USS Arizona Memorial.
The celebration at Kilauea will feature hula, Hawaiian music and tours with scientists and other experts.
All fee-charging parks are free during the celebration Aug. 25-28.
“We are so excited to celebrate the centennial anniversaries of the National Park Service and Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park the Hawaiian way, with music, culture and community,” said Park Superintendent Cindy Orlando. “Hawaiians have lived as stewards of this treasured landscape for centuries, and we hope everyone can join us for a festive weekend of fun, learning and camaraderie,” she said.
