A Kauai company established to make a “superfruit” beverage using the fruit of coffee trees reduced its financial loss in the second quarter in large part to selling brewed coffee.
KonaRed Corp. announced that it lost $794,468 in the April-June period, which represented an improvement from a $1.1 million loss in the same quarter last year.

The company said product sales rose 32 percent to $228,393 in the recent quarter from $159,970 a year earlier primarily because of ready-to-drink cold-brew coffee that it began selling in February. The gain, along with a roughly $200,000 reduction in general and administrative expenses, mainly drove the improvement to KonaRed’s bottom line.
KonaRed was founded in 2008 and launched sales about four years ago with a product made from coffee cherries positioned to compete against sports drinks.
Over the last year or two, KonaRed has attempted to diversify, selling packages of coffee beans, cold-brew coffee, coconut water and green tea.
In the financial report filed Monday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, KonaRed said it has discontinued sales of coconut water.
To sustain operations, KonaRed has been selling stock, and continued to do so in the second quarter. The stock closed Monday at about 5 cents per share, where it has been for most of this year.
