A 25-year-old man charged with second-degree murder was being taunted by the victim moments before the fatal stabbing last week in Makiki, according to a police affidavit.
Ilai Luamanu of Hawaii Kai was charged Sunday with second-degree murder and was being held at Oahu Community Correctional Center unable to post $500,000 bail. He has a preliminary hearing in District Court scheduled for Wednesday.
Luamanu is accused of fatally stabbing Iosua Fiso, 28, at about 4:30 p.m. Aug. 7 on Makiki Street near Kinau Street. Fiso was taken to a hospital, where he died of a stab wound to the chest.
A witness told police Luamanu told him shortly before the stabbing that Fiso had just threatened two people. Then Luamanu began arguing with Fiso in a garage on Makiki Street, a police affidavit filed in District Court on Monday said.
The witness told police Luamanu began chasing Fiso, who then taunted Luamanu and ran away when Luamanu chased him, the affidavit said.
Another witness told police Fiso taunted Luamanu multiple times by raising his hands to fight and then fleeing as Luamanu approached.
The witness said he saw Luamanu throw something that appeared to be a rock, glass or bottle at Fiso from more than 10 yards away, the affidavit said. The document does not describe the actual weapon. Bleeding from his abdomen, Fiso held his belly as he walked away and collapsed in the street, the witness said.
Luamanu left the scene before police arrived and was arrested Friday near Waikiki.
