“Maligned Master: The Glory of Salieri,” a 90-minute radio drama written by KHON-TV newscaster Joe Moore, will air at 6:30 p.m. today on HPR-1.
The program, which premiered June 19, is being rebroadcast on the birthday of Italian composer Antonio Salieri, who is best remembered as Mozart’s bitter rival in the award-winning play and movie “Amadeus.” In fact, he was a well-regarded musician in his day and one of the most influential composers of classical music.
Eager to restore Salieri’s rightful reputation, Moore enlisted actor F. Murray Abraham to star in “Maligned Master” as the ghost of Salieri, who comes to Honolulu and regales a concert audience with insights into his life, music and relationship with Mozart. Abraham won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Salieri in the 1984 film.
The program includes excerpts of Salieri’s music performed by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra.
