OFFICERS GET SECOND CHANCES
Honolulu Police Department officers prosecuted in state court have an advantage over those prosecuted in federal court. The state gives second chances, called deferred acceptance of guilty or no-contest pleas. If the defendants stay out of trouble for a specified period, the charges are dismissed. Federal court doesn’t allow deferred pleas and often gives tougher sentences. Here are the successful criminal prosecutions of HPD officers since 2010 in the two court systems
