Well, he’s not exactly from here, but he did attend 10th grade at McKinley High School, and now he’s the highest-paid actor in the world.
We’re speaking of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who earned $65.4 million between June 2015 and June 2016, overtaking Robert Downey Jr., according to Forbes magazine, which keeps track of such things.
Variety magazine reported that the bulk of Johnson’s earnings came from his roles in the “Fast and Furious” franchise, the disaster movie “San Andreas,” and the HBO series “Ballers,” as well as upfront fees for “Fast 8” and the “Baywatch” movie.
We can debate his actual skills as an actor, but he’s certainly one of the most fun to watch, and did we mention he wen go McKinley?
The good news could be better
Slow and steady: That’s one way to view the results of college- readiness tests of Hawaii’s high school seniors.
After two years of testing soon-to-be seniors on college-level coursework, state officials saw slight improvements in the subjects of reading, math, science and English. Among the 10,525 public school students tested, the average score across the four subjects rose to 17.8 from 17.5; among 12,232 pupils statewide, it increased to 18.7 from 18.5. So that’s good.
Still the percentage of Hawaii students who met benchmarks in all four subjects was a disheartening 15 percent, compared with the national average of 26 percent.
Just gotta keep steady on this uphill battle.
