Former University of Hawaii softball standout Jessica Iwata was named to the USA Baseball Women’s National Team on Thursday.
The national team will compete in the World Baseball Softball Confederation Women’s Baseball World Cup scheduled for Sept. 3-11 in Gijang, South Korea.
Iwata, an all-star shortstop at Kauai High School and again at UH, is listed as an infielder and right-handed pitcher on the 20-player U.S. roster. She was among 40 players selected for the National Team Trials held this week at Cal State Fullerton and was named to the final roster after three days of games at Goodwin Field.
Iwata is the UH softball program’s career leader in runs batted in and ranks second in hits, doubles and home runs.
Chaminade picked sixth in volleyball poll
The Chaminade volleyball team is picked to finish sixth — the highest among the four local schools — in the Pacific West Conference preseason poll released Thursday.
The Silverswords received 121 points. Brigham Young-Hawaii was voted seventh with 116 and one first-place vote, Hawaii Pacific came in ninth with 92 and Hawaii Hilo was 10th with 68.
California Baptist was picked to win the 14-team conference with 189 points and eight first-place votes.
Amateur boxing card Saturday at Palolo
Junior Olympic champion Nes Tiburcio Jr. will fight state champion Glenn Nebres III in the main event of Saturday’s Hawaii Amateur Boxing card at Palolo District Park Gym.
The bout is one of some 18 scheduled between fighters from Oahu and Kauai. The co-main event features state champions Lyndon Patrico Jr. against A.C. Bryant.
Fights begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $15 at the door.
